Ava waited until she heard Gwen’s car leave the driveway before slumping down on the couch and pulling out her phone. She planned to look over the following week’s schedule, but ended up mindlessly playing Candy Crush for fifteen minutes. Garbo hopped up on the couch beside her and gently headbutted Ava’s thigh, demanding attention. Ava buried her fingers in the cat’s soft, gray fur, provoking a loud purr.

Ava was nodding off to sleep when the keypad on the front door beeped, jolting her into lucidity. She bolted up and walked into the entrance hall just in time to see Luke pushing the door open. She secretly hoped that Alfonso had waved him off from the car, but then she heard the knock of suitcase wheels up the front steps, and felt a twinge of panic. She wasn’t exactly prepped for meeting the ex.

She’d taken a course on Moretti’s films in college. He was a genius, arguably the greatest indie filmmaker of the nineties. His style had changed after he’d married Gwen and they’d started the company, and the movies got even better, until they got worse.

People cited Gwen as his muse. They said that after the split, Moretti’s movies lost their heart. Ava was inclined to agree. And, while she appreciated the man as a filmmaker, he was still Gwen’s ex, and Ava was not looking forward to the meeting.

Alfonso Moretti was a tall, annoyingly attractive man.

Ava hated him immediately. Okay, maybe she didn’t hate him, but she hated the thought of him being Gwen’s ex, the thought that they were married and had a kid and that they were once happy. She hated his stupid, smug, handsome face, and the stupid, charming way he said, “Hi. I’m Alfonso.”

“Ava.” She held her hand out and stepped to the door, wishing she had just a hint of her powers so she could give him a really firm handshake. “Ava Eisenberg.”

“Hey Ava!” Luke smiled. “Are you hanging out with mom?”

“Your mom had to go to the office, so I’m here to hang out with you.” She returned his smile, acutely aware of Alfonso’s eyes on her.

“Okay.” Luke took the small rolling suitcase from his father and turned to head for his room. “I’m going to go organize my rock samples to take to Jacob.” He looked back. “Thanks for my new comics, Dad.”

Alfonso bent down to give him a quick hug. “No problem, kid. I’ll see you in a week, okay?”

“Cool!” Luke exclaimed, and took off, suitcase clattering behind. “See ya!”

“That moment when your son chooses rock samples over you.” Alfonso’s mouth pulled into an irritatingly charming smile as he fixed his gaze on Ava. “So, the rumors are true.”

“I don’t really pay attention to rumors,” Ava said sweetly. “If I did, well, I wouldn’t have a very good opinion of you.”

He laughed—a full-bodied, boisterous laugh that was warm and inclusive, and annoyed her even further because she didn’t want to be charmed by this man. “Oh, she knows how to pick ’em.
